Advanced Imaging for Precise Prostate Cancer Detection

PSMA Digital PT/CT Scan

A targeted PET/CT scan using PSMA technology to accurately detect and assess prostate cancer lesions.

About PSMA PET/CT Scan

A PSMA PET/CT scan is an advanced imaging technique primarily used for the diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning of prostate cancer. This scan combines two distinct technologies: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT).

In this procedure, a small amount of a radioactive substance known as PSMA (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen) is injected into the bloodstream. PSMA targets and binds to receptors that are present in high numbers on prostate cancer cells. While the PET scan detects the radiation emitted by the injected tracer, the CT scan provides detailed images of the body’s internal structure. Together, they offer doctors a precise view of the prostate cancer lesions, including their size, location, and characteristics.

Why is a PSMA PET/CT Scan Performed?

PSMA PET/CT scans are mainly used in the management of prostate cancer. Here are some of the key reasons for using this imaging technique:

01. Detection of Prostate Cancer

PSMA PET/CT scans are highly effective in identifying primary prostate tumors and can also detect metastasis (spread) to other organs such as lymph nodes, bones, and nearby tissues. This capability makes it a crucial tool in the early detection of prostate cancer.

02. Staging of Prostate Cancer

By evaluating how far the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, the scan plays an essential role in cancer staging. It helps doctors determine the precise extent of the disease, which is important for deciding on the most appropriate treatment approach.

03. Identifying Cancer Recurrence

After initial treatment, PSMA PET/CT is valuable in detecting recurring prostate cancer, even when PSA levels (a marker for prostate cancer) are low. This can be challenging for other types of scans, making PSMA PET/CT highly reliable for monitoring after treatment.

04. Evaluating Treatment Response

The scan can track how well the cancer is responding to treatments like surgery, radiation therapy, or hormone therapy. It helps assess changes in tumor activity and size, enabling doctors to fine-tune the treatment plan for optimal results.

05. Planning Targeted Therapy

PSMA PET/CT scans provide accurate information on the location and spread of prostate cancer, helping doctors plan targeted therapies. These therapies can be more focused on the tumor while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues.

06. Selecting Candidates for PSMA Therapy

This scan is essential in determining whether patients are suitable for PSMA-targeted therapies, such as radiation therapy that targets PSMA receptors. It ensures that only patients with tumors expressing PSMA are selected for these advanced treatments.
